FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is pigmentation?

Pigmentation refers to the colouring of your skin, which is largely determined by a pigment called melanin. When something disrupts your body’s melanin production, you may develop dark or uneven patches.

Sun exposure, hormonal fluctuations, and certain medical conditions can all alter melanin levels in your skin. Some forms of pigmentation fade on their own over time, while others require targeted treatments to see noticeable improvements.

What are the different type of pigmentation? Hyperpigmentation: This is the umbrella term for any darkening of the skin, which can occur anywhere on the face or body. Hyperpigmentation often shows up as sunspots, age spots, or blotches that become more visible in the warmer months when UV exposure is higher. Melasma: Often linked to hormonal changes, melasma typically appears as brown or greyish patches on the cheeks, forehead, or upper lip. Pregnancy, birth control, or hormone therapy may trigger this condition. Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH): If you’ve experienced acne or any other kind of skin trauma, you may notice dark marks long after the initial injury has healed. PIH can sometimes look similar to acne scarring, even though they’re different processes.

What causes pigmentation issues? Several factors contribute to pigmentation, and identifying the root cause can make all the difference when it comes to selecting the right treatment. The most common triggers include: Sun Exposure: UV rays stimulate melanin, causing everything from freckles to sunspots. Repeated exposure can lead to patchy, uneven skin tone over time. Hormones: Fluctuations in oestrogen and progesterone can increase melanin levels, resulting in conditions like melasma. Inflammation or Trauma: Even something as simple as a bug bite or mild burn can lead to post-inflammatory marks. Genetics: Some people are naturally more prone to pigmentation issues, making it even more important to find the right skincare approach.

How do we treat pigmentation at The Shiny Touch? Our goal is to address both the visible signs of pigmentation and the underlying factors that cause it. Depending on your skin’s unique needs, we may recommend: Chemical Peels: These remove the outer layers of dead skin cells, encouraging fresh, evenly pigmented skin to emerge. Laser or Light Therapies: Targeted beams of light break down excess pigment, allowing your body to naturally eliminate it. Microneedling and Radiofrequency: These treatments help stimulate new collagen and can improve the appearance of uneven tone. Medical-Grade Skincare Products (Korean skincare) : A custom regimen with brightening ingredients like vitamin C, kojic acid, or hydroquinone can help fade existing spots and prevent new ones from forming.

How to maintain the results of my pigmentation result? Tackling pigmentation requires a daily skincare routine that supports and extends your treatment results. We often recommend broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect your skin from damaging UV rays, even on overcast days. Additional lifestyle adjustments, like wearing hats or seeking shade, also help keep hyperpigmentation at bay. At The Shiny Touch, we take a personalised approach to skincare. Before we begin any treatment, we’ll sit down with you, look closely at your skin, and discuss your goals in detail. By creating a plan tailored to your needs, we can address pigmentation more effectively and help you achieve a smoother, more balanced complexion.
