HOODED EYELIDS

Hooded eyelids are a common concern we see in the clinic. If you have hooded eyelids or heavy eyes, you can always look tired, even when you’re feeling well-rested. This can have a significant effect on self-esteem, and patients often feel that it’s starting to affect how they are perceived at work or in relationships.

When the skin on the brow bone and upper eyelid starts to sag and droop over the eye, it can even change the shape and size of the eye area, making the eyes appear smaller. Women often feel they have difficulty applying makeup.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What are the causes of hooded eyelids?

There are several reasons for hooding of the upper eyelids:

  • Genetics: Heavy, hooded eyelids are often the result of genetics, and younger men and women can frequently feel their confidence is affected.

  • Medical issues: Certain conditions can cause eyelid sagging, also known as ptosis, which requires medical intervention.

  • Sun damage: UV exposure, coupled with the constant contraction and relaxation of the orbital muscles, means that patients who spend excessive time outdoors and do not protect the delicate skin surrounding the eyes often experience premature ageing.

  • Ageing: this is the most common cause of hooded eyelids. As collagen and elastin levels deplete, the skin becomes less elastic and starts to sag. Fatty tissue begins to protrude and the brow descends.

How do we treat hooded eyes with anti-wrinkle injections? Strategic placement of this product can weaken the depressor muscles that pull down the eyebrows, creating a slight lift that improves the hooding of the eyelid.

How do we treat hooded eyelids with dermal filler? Hollowing at the temples is a common facial ageing change and can create an impression of heaviness on the upper eyelid. Restoring lost volume using hyaluronic acid dermal fillers can lift sagging skin on the upper lids.
