JOWLS

In recent years, the lower third of the face has become a key focus on social media, and a snatched and taut jawline has become a key beauty indicator. At the same time, a softening jawline is often one of the first signs of facial ageing, so it’s no surprise that jowls are a common ageing concern for many men and women.

Jowls refer to the loose, fleshy skin along the lower jawline, often appearing in combination with a double chin. The definition between the lower part of the face and the neck is lost.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What causes jowls?

The ageing process affects the face in several ways. As we get older, there is a process of bone reabsorption which subtly affects the face’s underlying structure. At the same time, we lose facial fat due to shrinkage of the fat pads in the mid-face or descent of the soft tissues as our skin loses structure and elasticity. The depletion of collagen and elastin causes the latter. Skin droops downwards, and fat gravitates to the lower third of the face.

Certain factors can accelerate this development. Prolonged sun exposure speeds up the breakdown of collagen and elastin, contributing to premature facial ageing. Weight fluctuations can also lead to increased skin sagging.

Also, some individuals are genetically predisposed to developing jowls or feel they have a heavier appearance to the lower face and are keen to produce a more youthful contour to the jaw.

What Jowl treatments do we offer at TST? Jowl treatments depend on the underlying cause; often, a combination approach is required. There are many treatments available that can kickstart the body’s natural healing response, causing collagen and elastin production to be stimulated. Morpheos 8 therapy. It is utilising radiofrequency energy in the dermis to improve skin sagging. delivers RF energy deep into the skin to stimulate multiple layers of skin remodelling. This results in immediate contraction and collagen stimulation through fibroblast activity within these treatment zones. Dermal fillers are a highly effective treatment for restoring volume in the mid-face, which creates a lift of the lower third of the face. Profhilo Structura is an innovative treatment for sagging jowls. It combines high and low molecular weight hyaluronic acid to regenerate fat tissue in the mid-face. It can also target hollowing in the cheeks and improve sagging along the jawline.

How long will the results of jowl treatment last? The duration of your results will depend on the treatment we have used. Dermal fillers produce an instant volumisation, and results depend on where they are injected and the individual’s response. In the mid-face, you can typically expect them to last 12 months. Treatments that stimulate collagen and elastin will usually take a few weeks to become noticeable, and results can last from six months to 18 months before you require a maintenance treatment.

Any down Time? This varies depending on the treatment, but most involve minimal downtime, and most patients can resume normal activities shortly afterwards. Most treatments cause mild redness or swelling, usually subsiding within a few days.
